What Is Personal Care at Home?

Personal care means hands-on support with the intimate daily tasks that keep a person clean, comfortable and well. Every visit is shaped around the individual's preferences, values and routine.

Support Ability, Don’t Replace It

Personal care should not automatically mean doing everything for somebody. Wherever it is safe to, we keep the person involved in their own routine.

In practice that might mean someone washing their own face while the carer helps with the harder-to-reach areas, choosing their own clothes, brushing their own teeth with a prompt, standing during dressing where that is safe, or taking part in preparing a meal rather than waiting for one to arrive.

These sound like small things. They are not. Retaining even part of a routine you have done for yourself your whole life makes a real difference to confidence and self-esteem — and losing it unnecessarily is one of the quickest ways for care to feel like something being done to you.

Built Around Your Routines, Not Ours

People do things differently. One person showers first thing; another prefers a bath in the evening. Some want breakfast before getting dressed. Many have cultural, religious or personal preferences around intimate care that matter a great deal to them and are easy for a standard service to trample.

A care plan can record preferences on time of day, bathing and washing routines, clothing, hair and grooming, food, culture, faith, gender preference for personal care where that is practicable, communication, privacy and how much the family is involved. We write those down so a care professional does not have to guess, and so the answer does not change when the person supporting you does.

Why Consistency Matters More Here Than Anywhere

Personal care runs on trust. Most people find it far easier to accept help with washing, dressing or continence from someone they know. A rota of unfamiliar faces turns something manageable into something someone dreads.

So we prioritise continuity of carers wherever we can, and our care team stays involved after care begins, so you know who to contact when something changes rather than starting again with whoever answers.

Nurse-Led Clinical Governance

What sets Kome Care apart is our nurse-led approach. Every personal care package is assessed by a qualified nurse, who writes a detailed care plan covering all clinical and personal needs. Complex tasks such as stoma care, catheter management, pressure area monitoring and PEG feeding are part of our personal care service and are delivered under written nursing protocols.

Care coordinators and on-call clinical support are available to carers in the field outside office hours, so a change in someone's condition gets escalated rather than left until the next visit. Families can see care records and have a clear route to reach the team. It is reassurance sitting alongside genuinely good personal care, not a substitute for emergency medical help — if someone needs that, call 999.
