Supporting a Client with PEG Feeding and Limited Mobility

Background

One of our clients required specialised support due to limited mobility and the presence of a PEG (Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy) feeding tube. The client was unable to mobilise independently and required assistance with feeding, medication management, and ongoing health monitoring while remaining at home.

The Challenge

The client needed consistent support to ensure nutritional needs were met safely through PEG feeding. In addition, regular prescriptions and laboratory investigations were required, which the client could not manage independently due to mobility limitations.

Our Intervention

Our care team provided compassionate and comprehensive support tailored to the client’s needs. This included:

  • Assisting with PEG feeding and ensuring feeds were administered safely and appropriately.

  • Supporting the client with daily care needs while maintaining dignity and comfort.

  • Collecting prescribed medications and ensuring continuity of treatment.

  • Assisting with laboratory investigations by collecting samples and transporting them to the laboratory for testing.

  • Returning laboratory results promptly when required to support ongoing care and treatment.

  • Maintaining regular communication and welfare checks with the client, including checking on his wellbeing even during periods when carers were not physically present.

  • Providing reassurance and emotional support to help the client feel safe and cared for.

The Outcome

Through the support provided:

  • The client was able to remain safely in his home environment while receiving the care he required.

  • Nutritional and medication needs were managed consistently and effectively.

  • Laboratory investigations were completed promptly without causing unnecessary stress to the client.

  • Regular welfare checks provided reassurance and helped ensure the client’s ongoing safety and wellbeing.

  • The client experienced improved comfort and peace of mind knowing that support was always available when needed.

Impact

This case demonstrates the importance of holistic and responsive care for clients with complex health needs. By combining practical assistance, health monitoring, and emotional reassurance, we were able to improve the client’s quality of life and ensure continuity of care within the comfort of his home.
